Darkroom Photography Foundation Track

Intro to Darkroom Photography I

This course investigates the aesthetic possibilities of darkroom photography as a visual medium. Topics include: exposure decisions, composition, depth of field control, fixed images versus depicting motion, film development, printing basics, and seeing and using available light.

Intro to Darkroom Photography II

Students continue mastering technical skills while beginning to develop a personal vision. Students build their ability to see light and exposure challenges and begin to create a personal style.

Intro to Darkroom Photography III

This course expands the students’ understanding of darkroom photography while providing them with the opportunity to experiment with traditional and non-traditional processes and materials. Students continue improving their technical skills while beginning to develop their visual language as artists. Includes individual and group critiques.

Digital Photography Foundation Track

Intro to Digital Photography I

This course introduces students to digital SLR cameras, including the many in-camera features that help produce quality images before any computer editing.  Each student must provide a digital SLR camera with both manual and automatic modes.

Intro to Digital Photography II

This intermediate class explores a deeper understanding of the technical aspects cameras and photography generally. Students will investigate the creative aspect of the techniques they have learned.

Topics include: Shooting in the manual mode, Basic Composition, using your histogram to make a good exposure every time, exploring the different autofocus modes, understanding ISO and how it affects the image quality, Seeing and using available light, using your aperture, shutter, and depth of field creatively.

Intro to Digital Photography III

Students continue mastering technical skills while beginning to develop a personal vision and a solid body of work. Includes regular individual and group critiques.

The Darkroom at Callanwolde

Callanwolde Fine Arts Center is one of the only places in Metro Atlanta to offer photographic darkroom classes outside of a college setting. Callanwolde’s darkroom can host up to 12 photographers at a time. We are confident that our instructors represent the best darkroom toning instruction available to the public in Atlanta!

Meet our Directors of Photography

Steve Schaefer, Co-Director of Photography

Steve Schaefer’s work has been published on the front pages of The Washington Post, USA Today, the New York Times and other national and international publications.

David Damon, Co-Director of Photography

Steve has also worked as a contract photographer for the New York Times best-selling book, America 24/7, and has a client list that includes corporations such as Delta Airlines and Bell South.

After earning his MFA, Steve taught full time at The Art Institute of Atlanta as a photography professor. There, he taught a wide range of subjects including photojournalism, and advanced multimedia classes. Steve has also served as a board member for the Atlanta Photojournalism Seminar.

David Damon studied Photography at the University of Georgia where he received his Bachelor of Arts degree. David leads and participates in Black and White workshops. His present work is centered on toning and alternative photographic processes and has been exhibited at various venues in Atlanta and at the Center for Fine Arts Photography in Fort Collins, Colorado.

About Callanwolde Fine Arts Center

Callanwolde was built in 1920 by Charles Howard Candler, eldest son of The Coca-Cola Company founder Asa Griggs Candler. The estate is located in the Druid Hills neighborhood of Atlanta and is on the National Register of Historic Places. The 12 acre estate contains a magnificent Tudor Revival style mansion, lush gardens, and several outer buildings. Click here to learn more about the history of Callanwolde.

Today, Callanwolde is owned by Dekalb County and is the home of Callanwolde Fine Arts Center. Callanwolde Fine Arts Center is a cultural community conservatory of the arts on a 12 acre campus. Callanwolde offers classes in the performing arts (music, music recording, dance, dance fitness), visual arts (painting/drawing, pottery, weaving/textiles, jewelry/metalsmithing, photography), writing, yoga, horticulture, culinary arts and more to students of all ages.
