Classes are offered quarterly and typically meet for ten weeks or less, with registration beginning approximately six weeks prior to the start of classes.

Summer Arts Camps
Callanwolde offers a variety of Summer Arts Camp programs for children of all ages from newborns to teenagers. Sessions include visual arts, pottery, drama and Kindermusik programs. Age limits are determined by Callanwolde's instructors and the Programs Department. No exceptions will be made.

Summer Dance Camps
Callanwolde offers a variety of summer dance camps for children ages 7 and up. Dance workshops are offered in Ballet, Modern and Jazz styles of dance. The dance camp schedule is listed in the Summer Class Catalog.
Callanwolde Hours
Callanwolde Fine Arts Center is open Monday through Friday 9:00AM until 10:00PM and on Saturdays 9:00AM until 4:00PM. Callanwolde is closed on Sundays and most holidays, except for special events. Please call (404) 872-5338 for more information about closed holiday dates.
Parking
Callanwolde Fine Arts Center has free parking available in the open lot behind the arts center. Auxilliary parking is available at the adjacent Laurel Heights Hospital on Briarcliff Road. For safety reasons, parking in the driveway, near entrances and in fire lanes is prohibited.
MARTA
Callanwolde is easily accessible using MARTA. The Edgewood/Candler Park rail station is the closest rail station to Callanwolde and is approximately 3 miles away. Bus service is available to a bus stop in front of Callanwolde on Braircliff Road. Take Bus # 6 from either the Edgewood/Candler Park MARTA rail station or the Lindbergh rail station to get to Callanwolde by bus.

Children & Teen Dance Classes
ALL CHILDREN MUST HAVE
PARENTAL SUPERVISION BEFORE
AND AFTER THEIR CLASS
The aim of this program is to instill in each student the joy of dance as an art form. The program includes technical skills, improvisation and choreography, musical background, and performing experience within a graded structure. Children are allowed a high degree of personal freedom for their own invention and creativity. This educational approach to dance utilizes problem-solving, observation, and sharing of experience.
Make-Up Policy:
Dance students must make up classes missed during a quarter before the end of that quarter. Children should attend a class of the same age group with the same instructor and should discuss make-up policy with their instructor. Callanwolde is not responsible for classes missed due to student absences.
Parents’ Day:
Parents will observe the class “in action,” and may discuss their child’s personal growth and development with the instructor on the last day of Summer Quarter dance classes.
Scholarship Assistance:
A limited number of partial scholarships are available to dance students 5-years-old and older. Criteria are need, talent, and commitment to the program. Applications for the 2008-2009 school year are available in the Programs Office. The deadline to receive applications is Thursday, July 31, 2008.
Mommy & Me Ballet (2-4 years)
For parent and child to experience the fundamentals of dance together! Increase your physical strength, coordination, flexibility, and endurance while experiencing the joy of movement. A wonderful way for you and your child to learn the basics of ballet while sharing a creative process.

This camp is designed for those students who want a little more challenge from their performing arts camp. The first week we will focus on developing technique, diving a little deeper into games/exercises that teach acting and movement skills. The second week, the focus is shifted toward rehearsing for the performance on the last Friday. A desire to improve and prior performance experience is recommended. PEEK-A-BOO, I LOVE YOU
Newborns to 18 months–Parent/caregiver attends entire session
Have fun learning new songs, lullabies, and ways to say ”I love you” using touch, Mother Goose rhymes, literature books, and chants. Activities include instrument play, American Sign Language, and special parent-baby dances that stimulate baby’s eyes, body and mind. Parents connect with other newborns and families in the community as well as learn how music encourages the child development process. Imagine the fun we will have as we go on classroom road trips in our bus named Van Go! We’ll go hiking, to the beach, play in a vacation cottage, and plan a stop at the carnival. Our imaginations will takeoff as we build a campfire with rhythm sticks, flashlights, and red scarves. We’ll sing all your favorite camp and car song games and learn some new ones. Each lesson will feature music, stories, instrument play, snacks and crafts. Precious Metal Clay Intensive Weekend Workshop
In this 2-day workshop you will learn about Precious Metal Clay–a putty-like mix of silver powder, water and binder that makes it possible for almost anyone to make real silver jewelry within hours. PMC can be molded, textured, and layered with simple inexpensive tools to make pendants, earrings, small sculpture–in fact just about anything! The work is dried and fired in a kiln where the water and binder are driven off to leave a unique object that is100% pure silver. We will cover PMC’s forms and properties, as well as a wide variety of techniques you can use to create your own unique works. Firings will allow students to end class with fine silver pieces. Advanced Techniques in Precious Metal Clay - Gems & Gold
Previous course or experience necessary in PMC. In this two-day Intensive Workshop you will learn various methods for setting gemstones, which will be fired along with PMC+. You will also learn how to apply 24K Gold to your freshly fired PMC pieces using an ancient Korean technique known as Keum-Boo. Kilns, agate burnishers, etc. for this fascinating process will be available. Students must purchase and bring to class their own gems and 24K Gold. Consult the online Supply List; specific information regarding the types of gemstones (specific for high firing temperatures) and the type of 24K Gold included. No substitutions! Order at least two weeks prior to class to make sure you receive materials in time. As always, PMC+ will be provided for the construction of your pieces.

Antique Restoration with Alan Noel
Don’t discard that old piece of furniture, its varnish blackened with age, that you found in Grandma’s attic. You can restore it to its former beauty using techniques that won’t diminish its value or permanently assign it back to the attic. In his own shop, Alan will demonstrate how the pros refinish and restore an antique piece of furniture to its former glory. He will disassemble the piece, where necessary, prep the wood surface for staining and color-matching, then choose and apply the finishing system most suitable for the piece. All along the way, Alan will share some tricks of the trade—like strippers and how they work and when to use them; surface preparation and how to know when you are done; fillers, not just for holes and scratches; and finally, applying a totally controlled, layered finish topped off with French polish. Note: The class will be held in Alan’s shop, but students should report to Highland Woodworking and the class will carpool to his shop. Please arrive by 8:45am. Min. 4, max. 12.

The human face is always an intriguing subject for artists. Collect and bring 6 large b&w images of people’s heads from books, magazines and newspapers. We will examine key proportional relationships of the features and human head as we look at considerations for the profile, three-quarter view, and full-face positioning. Bring a 5x7 or 8x10 b&w photo of a friend, celebrity or loved one’s face (high quality, not digital). Also bring a 14x17 spiral-bound drawing pad, small mirror, and a sack lunch. Colored Pencil Portrait Workshop
Colored pencil is a wonderful medium for portraits because it has a subtle, soft visual appearance achieved by layering many colors together. The softness of this medium is especially nice for rendering children. We will examine facial proportions for preliminary drawings then study skin tones and hair color in order to select the color scheme for each individual portrait. Handbuilding
Recommended first clay course. All levels will learn the expressive potential of pinch, coil, and slab construction.
Pottery on the Wheel
Introduction to the potter's wheel, for beginning and intermediate students. Basic throwing skills will be taught, as well as design and decorative techniques for functional pottery forms.
Intermediate Handbuilding
Those with at least two quarters handbuilding experience will learn more advanced non-wheel techniques. Emphasis placed on form, surface and expression.
Intermediate Pottery
Students will learn to refine their throwing technique, with emphasis on altering the thrown form. At least two quarters of throwing experience, plus a basic knowledge of handbuilding is recommended.
Independent Study
Students with advanced throwing skills and at least one quarter of handbuilding, work independently on advanced projects and meet with their instructor on a scheduled basis for critique. Instructor's approval needed prior to registration. Enrollment: 6 handbuilding and 6 wheel students.
Studio Procedures
Internship course for learning to operate a pottery studio. Kiln firing and design, basic glaze formulation, and photographic techniques will be covered. You will work with assistants and attend 5 mandatory lecture sessions. (This course is required prior to application for pottery assistantship.) Tuition includes cost of studio manual. (Use separate registration form).

All Adult Pottery classes are 8 weeks
The tuition includes a $35 fee which covers the cost of 25-lb. bag of stoneware clay, glazes, and 2,000 cubic inches of glaze firing. Additional clay and tools may be purchased from the Pottery Department. Firing methods include Raku, cone six oxidation, Salt, Soda, and cone ten reduction. All work fired at Callanwolde must be produced in the Pottery Program studios (no outside work allowed). Students may access the studios on weekends and most afternoons for practice at no additional cost.
You may register for pottery classes online, by calling the registration office, or by simply mailing in your pottery registration form. Tip: Pottery classes fill quickly. It is advisable to mail your registration in early, so it can be processed on the morning of Monday, May 19.
When filling out the pottery registration form please list a first and second choice of classes (or more) in your order of preference. If your first choice class has been filled, you will be registered in your next class choice with space remaining. You will be contacted if all your pottery class choices have already been filled. Beginning/Continuing Camera & Darkroom
For beginning students seeking a solid foundation in basic mechanics of the camera and introduction to black-and-white darkroom. For continuing students to improve darkroom skills and expand portfolio. One-half of class time spent concentrating on camera techniques: shutter speeds, f/stops, lenses and accessories in both automatic and non-automatic SLR cameras. The other half of class time will concentrate on darkroom techniques and developing/printing of black-and-white film. Advanced students will be assisted with individual goals and projects. Open to students ages 15 & up. Min. 8, max. 10.
Supplies and Equipment: Bring camera and its manual to first class. Students required to supply film and paper. Tuition includes chemical fees and daily access to darkroom outside of class, as well as one workstation per student.
