Self-Guided Tour Hours & Admission

Self-guided tours are available Monday through Friday, 9 AM to 5 PM.

In keeping with our mission to be an open and available space for the community, Callanwolde will now host our daily self-guided tours with a donation-based system rather then a set fee. We hope this welcomes more people to the historic estate and allows a new outlet for those who wish to support our mission.

Callanwolde now offers free memberships to U.S. military veterans, as part of our veterans’ outreach program. Click here to learn more.

Callanwolde: Then and Now

The magnificent Tudor Revival style home of the Charles Howard Candler family was completed in 1920. Charles Howard was the eldest son of Asa Candler, who founded the Coca-Cola Company in 1892. Henry Hornbostle, renowned Pittsburgh architect, designed and supervised the construction of the 27,000 square foot mansion, which included a carriage house, gardener’s cottage, two greenhouses, swimming pool, six tennis courts, and two barns for livestock.

The Estate is located in the Druid Hills neighborhood of Atlanta, which was planned by Frederick Law Olmsted, designer of Central Park and the Biltmore Estate.

Of the Estate’s original 27 acres, approximately 12 remain intact after the Estate was saved from demolition by DeKalb County citizens in 1971.

Today the Callanwolde Estate is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and is owned by DeKalb County. DeKalb County and the Callanwolde Foundation work together to preserve and maintain the Estate. The grounds have been partially restored by DeKalb County, the Callanwolde Foundation, and the DeKalb County Federation of Garden Clubs and are maintained by DeKalb County and the Callanwolde Foundation.

On the Callanwolde Self-Guided Tour you will learn about:

  • The History of the Callanwolde mansion.
  • The Candler Family’s life on the estate.
  • How the Callanwolde Foundation currently utilizes the mansion.

Most importantly you will get to enjoy the beauty and splendor of this important piece of Atlanta history!
