DESCRIPTION:Introduction/Intermediate Blacksmithing (Teens & Adults)  \nThis course offers introductory instruction to the forging\, forming\, cutting\, and joining skills of blacksmithing. Students will learn basic blacksmith safety\, how to start and manage a solid fuel forge\, the heat treatment of tool steel\, and how to forge weld. Projects range from hooks\, stylized leaves\, a two-tined fork\, cold cut chisel\, tong jaws\, and a seasonally themed capstone project.   \nReturning students will have the option of forging a selection of heads and figures. The selection of projects includes but is not limited to: skeletons\, horses\, cats\, owls\, rats\, wizards\, dogs\, rams\, and dragons. Intermediate students may also work with the instructor on other independent projects of their own choosing.   \nMaterials will be discussed in the first class; fuel for the student’s forge as well as the mild and tool steel for planned projects are provided by the studio.  \nStudents will need to wear 100% natural fiber flame retardant fibers like cotton or wool. No synthetic fibers or blends. Long sleeve shirts and pants that cover tops of footwear. Footwear must be leather or cotton canvas shoes that fully enclose feet.  \nAbout the Instructor: Garrett lives in Decatur and is a member of the ABANA and Alex Bealer Blacksmith Association of Georgia. SUMMARY:JWY 02 - Beginning/Intermediate Jewelry & Metalsmithing (Mujtaba)
DESCRIPTION:Beginner students will learn traditional metalsmithing techniques like piercing\, soldering\, forming\, texturing and bezel setting to create jewelry of their own design or an assigned project. Intermediate students are self-directed but can explore more precision-based techniques such as prong setting\, chain making\, forging\, and hollow construction. Emphasis will be placed on proper use of tools and materials to create beautiful\, well-crafted and comfortable jewelry that will last years of wear. First two classes are demo heavy then students will have time to work on their projects for the remainder of the session. The instructor will give individual and group instruction throughout. Beginners can expect to make one to three projects in a session. All tools and materials are provided except gemstones and silver. Supply sources will be discussed at the first class.\n8 week breakdown: \nWeek 1: Studio tour and safety dance. Demos in piercing\, drilling\, annealing\, soldering\, roller printing. Students get a piece of metal to practice techniques \nWeek 2: Design consulting and selecting materials for session project(s). Refresher demos from week one. More demos in soldering\, riveting\, filing\, sanding\, polishing. \nWeek 3 – 6: Students work on their project. Instructor floats to each student in class to instruct/troubleshoot/demo. Whole class is given opportunity to learn from each other and observe individualized demonstrations. \nWeeks 7 – 8: Students are finishing up their projects and demos are given in related finishing techniques: Reaching a glossy finish vs. matte/sanded finish. Mixing and applying patinas\, stone setting.

DESCRIPTION:f you have some experience with drawing and or painting and are ready to take your skills to the next level\, this is the class for you! According to your desired objectives and concepts\, you will create a series of three works. An artist creates a series of works to explore a concept and/ or techniques. The possibilities are endless and all depend on where you are on your art journey. The first class will be used to explore your ideas\, brainstorm possibilities\, and create compositional studies of possibilities. We will also plan out what materials\, references\, and supplies you will need to accomplish your goals and objectives. Come to class with possible ideas/concepts\, an idea of what media and surfaces you want to create the works on and with\, and an open mind! You may also wish to work independently but have the company of the class and ask for advice or help when needed. Lorraine has over twenty years experience teaching collegiate level art foundations. The subject\, materials and goals depend on where you are on your art journey and where you want to go! In this point of time\, what is the best focus for you? How do want to develop your artworks? What materials or techniques do you want to experiment with? The first class will be used to explore your ideas\, brainstorm possibilities\, and create compositional studies. I will demonstrate basic experiments in watercolor and acrylic throughout the 8 weeks. The following classes you will develop/experiment at your own pace each work with support and help when desired.
