It is practiced today primarily for its health benefits\, stress relief and relaxation. The slow flowing movements are designed to stimulate the flow of energy or chi in the body with the ultimate aim of rejuvenation and increased longevity. The slowness also allows the mind to be actively involved so that one’s awareness directs the movements\, integrating one’s body\, mind and spirit. This class will improve flexibility\, balance and overall well being. Beginners will learn the 13 Golden Postures.

SUMMARY:TEX 01 - Floor Loom Weaving - Shadow Weave Using Dyed Warps (Edmisten)
DESCRIPTION:This spring we will explore shadow weave where 2 color (minimum) contrasting warp threads are woven with 2 color (minimum) weft threads to create amazing patterns that give off an optical illusion vibe as alternating bands of light and dark reveal the pattern. \nThe “Callanweaver” twist will be using a hand-dyed warp for one of the contrasting warp threads. This will challenge us as we combine 2 different warps\, prepared separately\, at the loom. Dye day may take place on a weekend at an off-campus location nearby. Students who can’t make the dye day will be provided with a dyed warp. \nStudents who have some prior weaving experiences are welcome in this class. Brand new weavers are encouraged to take the Weaving Introduction Workshop or Beginners Plus! Class. Supplies available include 8/2\, 10/2\, 20/2 and some 8/4 cotton and are included in the registration fee.

SUMMARY:JWY 04 - Beginning/Intermediate Jewelry & Metalsmithing (Mujtaba)
DESCRIPTION:Beginner students will learn traditional metalsmithing techniques like piercing\, soldering\, forming\, texturing and bezel setting to create jewelry of their own design or an assigned project. Intermediate students are self-directed but can explore more precision-based techniques such as prong setting\, chain making\, forging\, and hollow construction. Emphasis will be placed on proper use of tools and materials to create beautiful\, well-crafted and comfortable jewelry that will last years of wear. First two classes are demo heavy then students will have time to work on their projects for the remainder of the session. The instructor will give individual and group instruction throughout. Beginners can expect to make one to three projects in a session. All tools and materials are provided except gemstones and silver. Supply sources will be discussed at the first class. 8 week breakdown: Week 1: Studio tour and safety dance. Demos in piercing\, drilling\, annealing\, soldering\, roller printing. Students get a piece of metal to practice techniques Week 2: Design consulting and selecting materials for session project(s). Refresher demos from week one. More demos in soldering\, riveting\, filing\, sanding\, polishing. Week 3 – 6: Students work on their project. Instructor floats to each student in class to instruct/troubleshoot/demo. Whole class is given opportunity to learn from each other and observe individualized demonstrations. Weeks 7 – 8: Students are finishing up their projects and demos are given in related finishing techniques: Reaching a glossy finish vs. matte/sanded finish. Mixing and applying patinas\, stone setting.

DESCRIPTION:This class presents Art History with storytelling and a thematic approach. Instead of presenting art through a chronology\, each lecture will present art within a particular theme\, such as art about portraiture\, art about food and shelter\, and art about nature and technology. By focusing on a theme for each class\, we hope to show that there are ideas that we humans find important across the distance of time\, space\, and cultures. This class also gives participants the opportunity to make art based around each of these themes.
